Online Advertisement

This is an advertisement I found online for a tv channel called the Howard TV. This ad is geared toward men in relationships with the slogan being, “you have a fifty percent chance of getting divorced anyway.” They are using this statistic to convince men that watching pornographic shows will not hurt their relationship because the chances of it working aren’t very high. I reject the claims this ad is pushing. Even if the statistic is true there are many other factors that contribute to people getting divorced besides watching porn. Also the source of this information in the ad works for Howard Stern so I have a hard time believing their claims. This advertisement is very misleading and using weak arguments to make a point. However the point of the ad is to get people’s attention which it succeeded in doing though I highly doubt many people followed through and ordered the channel.

  1. Yo! I agree with this. I hate stupid ads like this. This ad is trying to convince us of something by giving us a silly percentage that is a weak fact anyway. It works for some people though; but if you really think it through, them telling us that we have "a fifty percent chance anyway" is really a beatable percentage. Plus, you are very right, Howard stern is an outrageous source and it is very hard to take anything that he says seriously. Almost every ad that I see has some annoying way of trying to persuade; but it is there job. Nonetheless, good post, ads are silly.

  2. I hate when tv companies put these types of ads in the internet. Howard Stern has gotten into trouble for having too much sexual stuff on the air and now t.v. again. I remember watching it when it aired on E! network with women taking their clothes off. You are right that it is again pushing it and Howard needs to stop putting these types of ads in the internet. The picture in the back ground is pushing it to the limit trying to ruin families by sexing up their ads. Good job on your ad post, I liked how rejected that the claim is pushing it.

  3. hi there,

i strongly agree with what you put in your blog regarding the relationship between watching porn and getting divorces. although there are indeed statistics going around for certain areas and a variety of subjects, not all of those statistics prove to be true. as a matter of fact, i like how you chose this example to prove how advertisements can be very misleading, and how there are so many different reasons as to why people get divorced, and that the main one is not because men chose to watch porn while being in a marriage. however, if i were to be in a marriage that had similar problems because of a bad habit, i would blame the problem to be the "porn watching," as an easier excuse than digging in deep to find the real problem. therefore, advertisements such as these do pull people in because the surface problems seems catchy and true enough until you dig further.
